PeaceBuilders® Creating Safe, Positive Learning Environments

Stephen Thom has served as a Wise Person (aka consultant) with PeacePartners since May of 2006. He has retired from public service after thirty-one years, during which time Steve served as a Program Officer for the Right to Read Program, Director of Asian Pacific American Concerns Office, and Advisor to the Secretary of Education in the Department of Education. Recently, Steve has served as a federal mediator in race relations, as Senior Conciliation Specialist and as Deputy Director for the Community Relations Service of the U.S. Department of Justice. Prior to federal service, Steve held positions as the Coordinator of the Asian American Studies Program at California State University in Fresno, as a teacher in the Los Nietos School District and as a social worker at All Peoples Community Center in South Central Los Angeles.

What Steve likes best about working for PeacePartners is the opportunity to continue his work in striving for equality and justice in helping children to avoid making bad decisions that often lead to violence, hurts, and tragic results for family, friends, schools of all races, color and creeds.

A rare fact about Steve is that in a national competition, he was one out of ten persons to be selected to be a HEW Fellow in 1975. What makes brings him happiness is being together with his family at the dinner table. Steve’s hobbies and interests are basketball, bridge, biographies, and travel.

Steve lives by the following quote and it gives him peace of mind.
“We judge ourselves by what we feel capable of doing;
others judge us by what we have done.”

~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
