Charlton Street School - Southbridge, MA
Experienced PeaceBuilders sites, like Charlton Street School, enjoy the benefits of a strong, ingrained PeaceBuilding culture. Young people know what is expected of them, and adults have the pleasure of spending the bulk of their time in positive interactions rather than on discipline.

But in order to enjoy these benefits, administration and staff at a PeaceBuilders site must ensure that PeaceBuilders permeates all aspects of life at a site: academic, social, physical, leadership, etc. No site does this better than Charlton Street School.

Charlton Street makes PeaceBuilders foundational to everything they do.

This display board includes student writing that illustrates how well the young people comprehend PeaceBuilders Principles like "Give Up Put-Downs." The title of the display confirms that the staff and students here are PeaceBuilders at work and at play.

The PeaceBuilders language is used by all adults at this school to present expectations and encourage young people to excel. Children at Charlton Street aspire to be PeaceBuilders Homework Heroes.

PeaceBuilding display boards and murals decorate the campus, like this one that urges people to "Give Peace a Chance" and which has words like "thoughtfulness, thankfulness, kindness and forgiveness" written on the branches. With constant reminders, it is more likely that children and adults will act in PeaceBuilding fashion.

This creative display board features the PeaceBuilders of the Week. With this positive recognition, young people are certain to increase their peaceful behavior.

This cute display gives specific examples of how to right wrongs.

Another awesome display board includes PeaceBuilder of the Week certificates along with PraiseNotes to the recipients.

Whatever theme the school is working with, whether it is "Read Across America Day" or a national holiday, PeaceBuilders is part of the message. Writing and reading lessons are enhanced by PeaceBuilders connections and discussions.

The auditorium at Charlton Street is also decorated with PeaceBuilders visual cues.

A display on the wall in the cafeteria reminds young people of polite PeaceBuilders "Power Words." Using these words makes lunchtime a much more peaceful event.

The PeaceBuilders Perennial Garden is a beautiful spot for students and staff to relax and feel at peace. It also provides a great way to teach young people about caring for nature.

And the wise adults at this site know that PeaceBuilders is not a program solely for the children. The staff lounge would not be complete without a PraiseBoard to allow the staff to show their appreciation for one another.

We are very grateful to the folks at Charlton Street School for their inspired dedication to the PeaceBuilders way of life and for sharing photos that illustrate exactly what PeaceBuilders looks at this school.
