East Layton Elementary School - Layton, UT
Principal Beth Johnston at East Layton Elementary School is a strong PeaceBuilders supporter and we are big fans of hers!

Ms. Johnston has seen the success of PeaceBuilders both at a previous school and now at East Layton. She is a wise person who models the PeaceBuilders Principles each day.

One of the secrets of PeaceBuilding success at this site is the PeaceBuilders Committee, whose members organize themes and events and make sure that responsibilities are evenly distributed so no one feels overwhelmed. Ms. Johnston says the staff’s sure and steady implementation of PeaceBuilders makes everyone’s job easier. Teachers feel comfortable helping to care for all the children and regularly use PeaceBuilders language and skills to supervise youngsters from other classrooms.

To ensure PeaceBuilders is a strong, continual focus at East Layton, the staff devotes ten minutes at every monthly faculty meeting to talk about PeaceBuilders, to share ideas, and to resolve whatever challenges occur.

To refresh their commitment to PeaceBuilders before each school year begins, the entire staff enjoys a PeaceBuilders lunch paid for by the wonderfully supportive PTA. At the start of the year, they hold a PeaceBuilders kick-off assembly, which includes an entertaining fashion show to demonstrate the dress code. During the assembly, positive and negative behaviors are acted out to help young people learn school rules in a fun, engaging way.

During the school year, PeacePreferrals are used to reward students who practice their PeaceBuilders skills. The student is called to Ms. Johnston’s office to receive the award.
Principal Johnston congratulates third grader, Mason, on receiving the PeacePreferral.
Together, they hang the PeacePreferral on the wall of honor so that everyone will see and know who has received this prestigious award.
Along with the award, Ms. Johnston presents each PeacePreferral recipient with a special book that she autographs with a praise.
To help include students in the process of looking for and rewarding PeaceBuilders behaviors, a PeaceBuilders Patrol has been established at this amazing site. Some students are selected by their teachers to join the patrol and some apply on their own. Children in the PeaceBuilders Patrol hand out “Increasing the Peace Slips” according to no regular schedule so that children never know when they are being watched or when they might be rewarded.
The children who receive the slips go back to class and explain what they did to earn the slip,
which then is included in a drawing to receive a catered lunch!
And to add excitement and infuse PeaceBuilders into outdoor activities, the wise adults at East Layton conduct a PeaceBuilders Field Day at the end of each year as a reward for students who have spent the year building peace and making their school a safer, place for everyone. Activities and games like a huge inflatable slide and a dunk tank have made Field Day fun in past years along with grade level games and activities to get the heart pumping and the spirit soaring.

With strong leadership and a team of people willing to commit themselves to the goal, PeaceBuilders becomes a part of each classroom and also a part of each hour of the day as everyone consistently practices the PeaceBuilders Principles. We praise Beth Johnston and the fine staff at East Layton Elementary for their continuous effort to make building peace a foundation for learning and achieving.
