National PeaceBuilder |
|
As our way of honoring PeaceBuilders who go beyond all expectations, PeacePartners, Inc. recognizes several
“National PeaceBuilders” throughout the year. These exceptional people work unselfishly to
build peace in their homes, in their schools and in their communities; and in so doing they make the world a
better place for all of us. Join us in celebrating each and every one of them for their contributions in creating
safer, more peaceful learning environments. |
September 2009 |
It is heartening that so many young people are learning to be PeaceBuilders. By making a concerted effort to
practice the PeaceBuilders Principles, many people's lives have been changed. Many schools, youth organizations,
communities, and homes have grown stronger and more peaceful.
While most of us have had to reevaluate our daily behavior and make personal changes in order to call ourselves
PeaceBuilders, one young lady seems to have been born with a knack and a powerful will.

Meet Bobbie Rivers, who is now a 4th grader at Ramona Elementary in Hemet, CA. |
Over the past several years, Bobbie has participated in her school's "Relay for Life," sponsored by the
American Cancer Society. The most recent relay occurred on her 9th birthday - and Bobbie was happy to spend
part of her day running for a cure. She saw, in this happy circumstance, an enormous opportunity to help
others.
Many nine year olds are sweet. Lots of them are kind-hearted. Some are generous. Few are selfless.
Self-sacrifice is something that is usually learned later in life as we develop a stronger sense of empathy
and humanitarianism. Bobbie Rivers is not your typical nine year old. She is a PeaceBuilders leader.
Since the relay fell on her actual birthday, Bobbie decided that in lieu of birthday presents, she would ask
friends and family to sponsor her for the "Relay for Life." The response was overwhelming.
Along with the birthday donations, a large jug was placed in the school office so that people could contribute.
The jug filled very quickly when Bobbie's classmates heard what she was doing. Teachers and staff donated as
well. Bobbie decided on a goal of $2400. She wants to raise $100 for every hour of the day because, as she
says, "Cancer never sleeps."
Bobbie has, so far, raised over $1200 - an astronomical amount for such a young lady and an inspiration to all
of us who know we could do more to build peace in the lives of others.
And Bobbie is not done. She is determined to meet her $2400 goal and we have no doubt she will. In our opinion,
she is already a winner!
We are so proud of Bobbie and of the example she sets for her schoolmates, her community, and for all PeaceBuilders.
Today and in the future, let's strive to be more like Bobbie Rivers. |
