National PeaceBuilder |
|
As our way of honoring PeaceBuilders who go beyond all expectations, PeacePartners, Inc. recognizes several
“National PeaceBuilders” throughout the year. These exceptional people work unselfishly to
build peace in their homes, in their schools and in their communities; and in so doing they make the world a
better place for all of us. Join us in celebrating each and every one of them for their contributions in creating
safer, more peaceful learning environments. |

Often, being a PeaceBuilder means taking the lead. In the beginning, as the adult leader of your class or
group, you may be the only PeaceBuilder; but leaders are often the first to think, say, or do something
important. That's how they change the world. It starts with one...

Ronnese Thornton is the PeaceBuilders coordinator at the Project WRAP after school
program at Lafayette Elementary School in Long Beach, CA. |
Ronnese was nominated because she doesn't just talk about PeaceBuilders, she models it-with the kids
at the site and with her co-workers. No matter what trials or problems life throws at her, Ronnese walks
a peaceful path. Ronnese is "the one" at the Lafayette WRAP after school program.
The kids describe her as a good leader. They say she follows the PeaceBuilders Pledge. They learn from
watching and copying her.
One of her colleagues says, "She is by far the greatest mentor I could ever have and she's wonderful
with the kids. Correct in discipline and instruction, she makes the kids feel welcome and safe. She does
promote peace and implements PeaceBuilders all the time."
Ronnese says, "PeaceBuilders is an excellent teaching tool. I can't think of anything more important
than students feeling safe (peaceful) and being kind (praising each other). For as long as I am able, I
plan to talk, believe, and work at peace... I would not be as successful if not for the support I have
from supervisors, administrators and support staff. This honor is also theirs."
What the world needs is leaders who lead by example, men and women who really believe in what they say
they stand for. It's easy to talk. Ronnese Thornton is a living example of what a PeaceBuilder looks and
acts like. The kids at the Lafayette WRAP program are following in her footsteps. |
