Creekside Elementary School - Kaysville, UT |
There are signs of the PeaceBuilders program all around Creekside Elementary School. This amazing site has made a culture of building peace. In November, the first thing we saw when visiting this awesome school is a display of Peace Cranes to commemorate the Sadako story.
Sadako was a little girl in Japan who was diagnosed with leukemia after being exposed to radiation during the bombing of Hiroshima. Sadako folded over one thousand Peace Cranes before she died in 1955. Her friends, inspired by her courage and strength, published a book of her letters and began to dream of erecting a monument to the brave girl.
Today, a children’s monument depicting Sadako holding a golden crane resides in Hiroshima Peace Park, and millions of people have been inspired by its inscription: “This is our cry. This is our prayer. Peace in the world.” Everyday more paper cranes arrive at the memorial from children all over the world in the hope for peace. |

In honor of Sadako and her inspirational feat, Creekside created their own display of Peace Cranes. |

One thousand Peace Cranes hang from the ceiling of the main entryway. |
Along with the beautiful display of paper cranes, there are many visual reminders that Creekside is a PeaceBuilding school. |

There are numerous creative PraiseBoards where students and staff post PraiseNotes for each other and for people in their community. |
|
This PraiseBoard includes children’s names and plenty of PraiseNotes for each child in the class. |

This bulletin board features the kindergarten PeaceBuilders of the Month in Ms. Newman’s class. |
|
The folks at Creekside have created a “Wall of Fame” where photos of distinguished PeaceBuilders are posted to acknowledge actions and attitudes that increase peace. |
We are proud to feature Creekside Elementary School, where PeaceBuilding is at the foundation of everything they do—from academics to character education to entertainment. We praise Principal Vickie Jessen and her incredible staff for modeling PeaceBuilders and for coaching students and their families to build peace not only at their school but in their homes everyday and in their community as well. |
