Victoria Elementary School - San Bernardino, CA
Cultivating a PeaceBuilding environment, like tending a garden, takes time and patience. You will be able to see immediate growth-it may be slow at first, but as you train your eye, you will begin to notice more and more each day.

If you are patient and diligent in your efforts, your peaceful culture will grow strong and sure as it has done at Victoria Elementary School where they have been building peace for ten years!

At Victoria, building peace has become as fundamental as reading, writing and arithmetic. They begin each day with the PeaceBuilders Pledge, they spend their days practicing the principles as they interact with each other, and they end their days satisfied that they have increased peace.

As the years have passed, the evidence of PeaceBuilders at Victoria has grown. Certainly, the attitude and behavior of the children has grown more peaceful and cooperative. On a more obvious level, the artwork around the site shows the continuation and growth of PeaceBuilding at Victoria over the past decade.

Years ago, PeaceBuilders murals were painted on walls along the exterior halls of the school.

The diversity that makes Victoria such a special learning environment is reflected in the murals that show all kinds of children working together to build peace.

These murals remind students of their commitment to be PeaceBuilders everyday and they reinforce the pledge that is recited each morning.

The murals cue children to behave in appropriate PeaceBuilding ways in specific places, like at the water fountain.

Last year new murals were added when the school underwent a renovation with the help of parent and community volunteers.

The new mural overlooks the children's playground and reminds children to build peace while they play.

Young people learn values and behaviors from the groups they belong to. While the youth at Victoria may belong to many different racial and ethnic groups, they share a very important common identity with a long and fruitful history. They are PeaceBuilders. They build peace.
