Ramona Elementary School - Hemet, CA |
Each year, the staff and students at Ramona Elementary School in Hemet, CA build "whirled peace"
and celebrate International Peace Day by participating in the Pinwheels for Peace campaign with other
PeaceBuilders sites across the nation and in U.S. Territories. This year is no exception. In fact, this year,
their pinwheel displays are absolutely gorgeous!
In order to differentiate them, each grade level is assigned a specific color of pinwheel to decorate. Staff
decorated pink pinwheels.
The beautiful displays were created in one day and were left up all week for the students, staff, and
parents to appreciate.

At the end of the week, as the school's PeaceBuilders coordinator, Gayle Mondt, was taking the displays
down, she was happily surprised by children who willingly gave up their play time to help her. Gayle was
impressed with their helpfulness but also with their carefulness as they took the pinwheels down. She
says, "They knew that someone had taken the time to decorate them and they didn't want them to get torn."
When peace permeates a site, small kindnesses are common, but that doesn't mean they are any less treasured.
The staff at Ramona Elementary continues to recognize and acknowledge students' peaceful behavior; and students
continue to grow into the PeaceBuilding leaders we need and value.
