Salvation Army - San Diego, CA
The Salvation Army Kroc Center’s summer camp program gives many children in San Diego an opportunity to meet new friends while they learn about building peace in their community.

Each summer the Kroc Center holds a PeaceBuilders training for their new and returning counselors to make sure they practice PeaceBuilding in their daily interactions with the children.

They learn the importance of modeling the PeaceBuilders Principles and learn activities and lessons they can do with the children to help them increase peace.

During the training this summer, they worked in small groups to create Visions of Peace because we must be able to visualize and organize our objectives before we are able to make the dream of peace a reality.
This vision illustrates the importance this particular group places on unity, diversity, and love. It includes the well known lyric “What the world needs now is love, sweet love.”
Each member in this group traced his or her hand and linked them all together to form an unending circle of “happiness,” “compassion,” “safety,” “love,” and “positive energy.” At the center of the circle is a heart to signify their commitment to the children.
This group created a world in the shape of a peace sign and partially covered it with a heart to illustrate their vision. Words like “acceptance,” “compassion,” “equality,” and “friendship” fill their world with love and peace.
Valentine’s Day in Heartville is the theme of this vision of peace. Since hearts are the symbol of love, this group used them generously to show how the believe peace can best be cultivated.
This group of counselors shows they know where peace begins. Their vision claims “We Build Peace,” and the drawings of the earth, the linked hands, and the connected people under the rainbow make clear that they plan to work together for the good of all.
The Vision of Peace activity is a wonderful way to start the process of building peace. It’s a great beginning of the year activity to do with staff and with children and teens.

The counselors’ visions of peace demonstrate how dedicated they are to creating a peaceful environment for themselves and more especially for the children who spend their summer days at the Kroc Center.

They infuse PeaceBuilding lessons into their daily activities and use the common PeaceBuilders language to reinforce the lessons and the children’s behavior. The counselors and the administrators at the Salvation Army are doing a fantastic job of spreading peace into their community—one child at a time.
