Victoria Elementary - San Bernardino, CA
Recently, as part of a renovation project led by “Hands On Inland Empire,” a program of Inland Empire United Way in California, a group of volunteers (individuals, families, teams, and corporate groups including PeacePartners, Inc.) joined together at Victoria Elementary School to re-paint buildings, restore the educational garden, paint playground games and maps, construct a running track to promote health and fitness, and create colorful PeaceBuilders murals to promote social skills and peaceful interaction.

In just one day, the school site was completely transformed and the children who return to school in August will be happily surprised.

Local artist Kerry Jones designed an enormous new PeaceBuilders mural to join the many existing PeaceBuilders murals already decorating the school. Not only does Kerry’s mural beautify a previously empty wall, it serves as a reminder to children on the playground that they are PeaceBuilders at work and at play.
Four people worked with Kerry to paint this amazing mural in just one day. Among the volunteers were local artists and a PeacePartners, Inc. representative.
The first balloon of three in the mural includes the PeaceBuilders Principles “Speak Up About Hurts I Have Caused” and “Right Wrongs.”
Victoria’s mascot is represented on the balloon in the center of the mural. Written on the flag at the top of the balloon are the words “Praise People.”
The third balloon includes the PeaceBuilders Principles “Seek Wise People” and “Give Up Put-Downs.”
At Victoria Elementary, building peace is a mainstay. PeaceBuilders lessons, activities and discussions are part of each and every day. At this incredibly multi-ethnic school site where numerous languages are spoken and many cultures represented, all the children feel safe and welcomed. The entire staff shows them, by example, what it means to be a PeaceBuilder. Peace is the plan.

When deciding to renovate the school, Victoria’s principal, Angela Neuhaus, ensured that the PeaceBuilders way of life was a focal point. She makes certain that building peace is central to all they do. We praise Ms. Neuhaus for her leadership. We praise United Way and all the volunteers who made this day a success. And we praise the staff, students and families at Victoria for the peace they continue to build day in and day out.
