St. Edward School - Jeffersontown, KY
The outstanding PeaceBuilders at St. Edward School have become experts in the field of Helping Others, particularly American soldiers serving in Iraq, but also soldiers in other parts of the world, their families, and veterans here at home.
With kindergarten teacher Joyce Curry leading the way, the staff and students at this school have completed over 40 service projects in support of our troops.
Through their ongoing interactions with soldiers and their families, the children have learned not only about the value of Helping Others but also about the climate and geography of Iraq, about some of the humanitarian work soldiers engage in while serving in that country, and about some of the harsh realities of being a soldier during war time.

What began as a class project in Ms. Curry’s kindergarten room has engulfed the entire school and become an enormous part of St. Edward’s culture. Their support of our troops has been so steadfast and thorough that now they are often called upon by troops who need help, support, or supplies—and St. Edward always comes through for them, because they are genuine PeaceBuilders.
As this photo reveals, over 2000 prayer cards have been sent to soldiers serving in Iraq. This continuing effort provides solace to the troops and a connection to people stateside who support all they do and appreciate what they must endure.
Additionally, St. Edward students and staff have sent thousands of cards and letters to troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, and veteran’s hospitals here in the states sending love and encouragement.
215 soldiers who spent Christmas on the other side of the world had their spirits raised by PeaceBuilders at St. Edward who sent gifts and good will.
This banner hanging at St. Edward says it all. American soldiers far from home know they are championed by these PeaceBuilders in Jeffersontown, Kentucky.
Because of all the service projects they do, St. Edward is often the first to hear about people who need support. Such is the case with children in an orphanage in Korea whom students at St. Edward have befriended.
The two groups of children from different parts of the world have become pen pals. St. Edward students have generously sent toys and kindness to their disadvantaged friends and have come to realize the satisfaction gained by reaching out and helping those less fortunate.
Reaching out and Helping Others builds peace. It also shapes compassionate leaders who will guide us into the future. Beginning in kindergarten and continuing all the way through the eighth grade, all the students at St. Edward are practicing compassion. They are indeed building peace. They are creating a better tomorrow.
