Scholls Heights Elementary - Beaverton, OR |
Students at Scholls Heights Elementary recently proved what an enormous difference they can make in their community. The fifth grade class decided to Help Others by raising money for the Children’s Cancer Association (CCA).
Motivated by the speech of an inspired fifth grader, the entire school raised an extraordinary sum.
The speech told of the writer’s personal family experience with cancer and of her own previous success raising money for CCA. She told her peers that if she could raise money alone, without a goal or serious plan, then a committee of dedicated students could do much to “provide hope and to help enrich the quality of life for seriously ill children and their families.” She challenged the entire school to make a concerted effort to raise $5000. The outstanding PeaceBuilders at Scholls Heights didn’t need to be asked twice.
With Principal Joan Kern’s consent and support along with the encouragement of Counselor Michelle Solberg and a supportive parent volunteer, a committee of fifth graders was formed to lead the way. They set a goal to raise the entire amount between January 29 and February 16! |

The fund-raising committee also reached out to their community for support. At the end of three short weeks, they surpassed their goal and raised over $6300, a staggering amount of money, for CCA!
It all happened because one young fifth grade girl had a dream. She enlisted the help of a group of young Wise People and led the team to make her vision a reality. One person can make a difference—and with the help of others, the difference can be astounding. From this one event, has come the idea for an annual fifth grade fund raiser at Scholls Heights. Each year, the reigning fifth grade class will raise funds for a charity of their choice. This effort to build peace will live on for years to come.
We praise the youth leadership at Scholls Heights Elementary for daring to dream of a better world and for working to make their dream come true. When fifth graders show what a positive influence they can have on their community, doesn’t it make you feel confident about the future? |
