Meredith-Dunn School - Louisville, KY |
The staff at Meredith-Dunn School is doing a stellar job at educating and involving parents in
building peace. They want to make sure that all the work they do with the children during the day
is reinforced beyond school hours. And their plan is working beautifully!
During their monthly PTSA (Parent Teacher Student Association) meeting, school counselor,
Angie Pleasant, conducted a Praise People lesson explaining to parents that "we build strengths in
others by praising them."
|
 |
Prior to the meeting, simple PraiseBoards for each class were created. The
students in those classes wrote PraiseNotes for their parents and affixed them
to the board.
|
A few PraiseNotes from each class were read aloud during the meeting (without mentioning names
to honor anyone who might not be comfortable with public praise).
|
 |
The PraiseBoards were passed around so parents could read the praise young
people had for them.
|
At the end of the evening, the PraiseNotes were taken home by parents who attended and sent to
parents who could not be present at the meeting. Blank PraiseNotes also went home with parents so
that they could reciprocate by praising their children.
In the end, due to this simple activity, parents have a more heartfelt understanding of the importance
of praise. They have experienced first-hand the effect praise has on the individual.
There are so many simple ways to educate and involve parents in building peace so they will carry on
this important work before and after school hours. We are proud to share this easy, yet powerful idea
from Meredith-Dunn School where the children are building peace at school and home and are learning
skills to create peace in their lives long after graduation.
