Camp Akwaba - Canton, OH
There are many ways to show peace. Individuals show peace through physical gestures, facial expressions, and actions. Artists show peace through the art they create. People and organizations often show peace through humanitarian acts in the form of donations of time and money.

PeaceBuilders sites show peace in many different ways as well: through behavior, music, academic and art work. Visual and auditory reminders of peace are very important because they cue us to behave in particular ways. PeaceBuilders sites across the nation find many ways to cue children, teens and adults to build peace.

A beautiful, meaningful PeaceBuilders visual is being created by campers and staff from Camp Akwaba (a summer camp supported by Mercy Medical Center), which provides a summer camp experience, that is completely founded around building peace and reducing violence, to urban children.

This year they began creating a tiled Peace Wall. Each tile is designed by a camper or camp counselor.

For phase one sixty tiles were decorated, each with a PeaceBuilders theme like the ones that say
"Peace is Power!" and "Believe in Peace."

The PeaceWall is a work in progress. New tiles will be added each year so that campers, counselors, and other staff will literally be able to watch peace grow.

There are many ways to show peace. Each distinctive site, with its unique individuals can come up with innovative ways. Of course, we want our PeaceBuilders sites to gather ideas from each other as well, which is why we continue to feature inspirational ideas like this one from the fine staff and the happy youth at Camp Akwaba where PeaceBuilders is not an occasional lesson but the constant theme all day, every day.
