University Academy Charter School - Jersey City, NJ
High school students everywhere are preparing to shape the future. PeaceBuilders high school students are also learning to be positive role-models and powerful leaders. Adults who work with youth know that when we give young leaders a positive role to play along with responsibilities to fulfill-their accomplishments are often stunning.

Such is the case with a group of young men in the SHIELD program at University Academy Charter School (UACS) in New Jersey, who are voluntarily taking a leadership role at their school and in their community in order to forge a more peaceful future.

SHIELD (Students Helping in Education, Leadership and Diversity) is a program for young men at UACS who are associate members of Psi Sigma Phi Multicultural Fraternity. SHIELD members are dedicated to community service, multi-cultural awareness, and the pursuit of a college education.

These students generously gave their money and time to participate in the recent PeaceBuilders Collect Pennies for Peace™ campaign to raise funds that will help build schools and further education in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

According to SHIELD Advisor, Angel Cora, "The guys in my group have been working rigorously to collect as much change as they can."

Realizing that they have opportunities young people in other parts of the world only dream about, these conscientious young men made a commitment to do what they could to help. They gave, and they collected money from others at their school, so they could help build a school, pay a teacher, and buy supplies for kids they'll never meet and who will probably never know about UACS or their generosity.

Marian Wright Edelman, the founder of the Children's Defense Fund said "A lot of people are waiting for Martin Luther King or Mahatma Gandhi to come back-but they are gone. We are it. It is up to us. It is up to you."

The PeaceBuilding men of the SHIELD Program at UACS know that it is up to them. The future is in their hands. And we are all the luckier for it.
