| Daniel Phelan Elementary - Whittier, CA |
Daniel Phelan Elementary School has been a PeaceBuilders site for some time now. Over the years, new teachers and staff have joined the Phelan family, and these new PeaceBuilders did not have the benefit of the original PeaceBuilders training. In order to get everyone on the same peaceful track, the teaching and support staff recently participated in a PeaceBuilders Essentials Workshop to help them implement the program effectively and faithfully together.
Everyone left the fun and informative training with strategies to build peace the very next day.
Along with learning how to faithfully implement PeaceBuilders day in and day out so that it becomes part of the culture rather than part of the curriculum, the Phelan staff learned the importance of setting a goal and creating a vision of peace to work toward.
In small groups, they discussed their ideas about peace and about what would help produce the ideal, peaceful environment for them and for the children. They talked about what they would see, hear and feel in an environment that is peaceful and safe; and they discussed how they could make their vision become reality.
The members of each group worked together to create a visual representation of their shared vision of peace. Each group created a “masterpeace.” |

With a staff this engaged and passionate, the practice of building peace becomes second nature. It becomes part of daily interactions—in the classroom, on the playground, and in the cafeteria. It becomes their identity.
We praise Principle Kathy Marin and the sterling staff at Daniel Phelan Elementary for their heartfelt participation in their PeaceBuilders training and for the peace they will build with each new day. These visions of peace they created foretell a fantastic future! |
