Many wonderful PeaceBuilding activities occur at Scholls Heights Elementary School in Beaverton, Oregon. In order to maintain a peaceful environment, the staff and children at this site use the PeaceBuilders language every day in all kinds of situations. The PeaceBuilders Principles are not only recited everyday during the pledge, they are valued and practiced daily by everyone on site.
In fact, the principles are posted in every single room.
Likewise, the PeaceBuilders Pledge and the essential "Power Words" are posted as reminders to everyone at Scholls Heights to increase the peace everyday.
As a special PeaceBuilding activity, during a focus on international studies, students created Tanka poems based on peace messages.
Exceptional PeaceBuilders are nominated as PeaceBuilders of the Week by their teachers and their photos are displayed on a mural at the school's entrance.
Of these special PeaceBuilders of the Week, five are selected by the 5th grade Mighty Knights PeaceBuilders Club to receive distinctive honors. Each of these PeaceBuilders receives a gold medallion to wear around his or her neck. They are also awarded a PeaceBuilders coupon book which includes popular prizes such as the privilege of being first to go to lunch, the opportunity to sing with the principal on Friday over the loud speaker, and a coveted pass to the game room or music room!
We praise the Mighty Knights for their creative PeaceBuilding incentives and for reminding us that while building peace is always its own reward, it should also be fun!
